I would highly recommend that nobody uses official guide for studying. Official guide is not a study book. Solving those questions should only be done after you I have covered the material. They Process of learning by only doing questions is very ineffective and in efficient. The closest analogy I can think of is looking at the painting through several thousand key holes that show you one tiny bit at a time.

You need to learn the theory behind the questions. You need to learn strategies and you need to work on your timing. There is no point in attempting just questions besides deceiving you into thinking that you’re making progress.

Hi,

Q-27 means you have to focus more on concepts, and there is much room for improvement. Once you are done with concepts, you should practice problems from OG. In the link below, you will find free video solutions to OG questions, so you can see how to resolve a problem smoothly within 2 minutes. https://gmatquantum.com/

Best wishes!

Hello mz19,

Welcome to the GMAT club. It is one of the great platforms to get information about the GMAT official test, Study plan, Section wise instructions, and many more. You are recommended to visit various posts and utilize this forum in the best efficient way.

Your current mock score is shaky but you can surely do better. You can schedule a Comprehensive counseling(https://calendly.com/mathrevolution/1-on-1-session) session for 30 mins with one of our experts to have detailed advice on your current study plans.

A score of 480 in the mock test is far indeed from the target score of 650+. It is all about raising 150+ pointers. We would like to recommend specific vital points which will be helpful. The score tells that neither the Math nor the Verbal is above average. Hence, both sections have to be taken care of simultaneously. To improve, you will require consistent learning and practice. Also, keep your motivation high to learn.

Since we are a math expert, we will recommend you go through our post on the GMAT club, which gives a complete Breakdown of GMAT math questions and types: https://gmatclub.com/forum/overview-of-gmat-math-question-types-and-patterns-on-the-gmat-211809.html#p1641411

Also, make a note of various possible combinations to achieve a score of 650+. The possible scores will help you track your performance after taking the mock or practice test. It will also help you maintain balance in both the sections, and you will always be in a great position to allot the study hours to a specific area accordingly.

After visiting the post, now is the time to start with the basics. To strengthen the basic concept on various topics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and word problems, you may refer to many free materials available in GMAT Club. Our website also helps strengthen the necessary "skills of math”.

Solve as many questions as you can relate to different topics, and it is recommended that you try to connect with many proven experts. You can visit Math Revolution and get access to our 7-day full on-demand course (27 topics, 490 subtopics, and 1,500 questions) for free trial lessons.

While concept learning, try solving 600 level questions by topic and be habitual of creating the error log. Prepare the list of all the doubts you face during solving and practicing questions. This practice will help you assess the topics in which you need more time to prepare. After solving as many questions as possible, take the 1st mock test and assess your performance. You may try our free diagnostic test once. Let some experts evaluate it to make you understand it better.

Continue the process with 650+ level by topic and then 700+ level questions by topic. The entire mock test should be completed in a disciplinary manner. Since this is a bit long journey, 1-on -1 tutoring can also be helpful to shorten the study period if your study budget is affordable.

Regular tests will reflect the positive change in the score, and hence, your confidence will boost up. Gradually, with the help of mock tests, you will be able to compete with time and hence will be able to learn time-management.

We appreciate your time and patience in reading this reply.

Hi mz19,

From what you've described, your studies so far have been "book heavy"; unfortunately, many GMATers who study in that way end up getting 'stuck' at a particular score level. Even the best books are limited in what they can teach you; they also can't force you to approach questions in a certain way and their explanations are often one-sided. As such, you would likely find it beneficial to invest in some new, non-book study materials for this next phase of your studies.

In addition, statistically-speaking, raising a 480 to the point that you can consistently score 650+ will likely require that you commit to at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. By extension, you might want to push back your planned Test Date (although you do not need to decide on that either way just yet). Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied so far? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) Are you planning to take the At-home GMAT or are you planning to take your GMAT at a Test Facility?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hello guys,

I am applying for Grad school and looking to score a 650 on the official GMAT exam. I took the diagnostic test with no prior preparation and scored a 480 (Q27 and V30). I did forget some very basic geometry formulas such as the perimeter of a circle and did a lot of stupid mistakes on the Quant section. I will be writing the exam in exactly 2 months from now. What are my chances of reaching 650 in 2 months? And what study plan should i follow?

For context, I did my undergrad in engineering, and got the complete Manhattan strategy guide set and the OG 21. I read the GMAT roadmap book and plan on reading the rest of the strategy books afterwards. I also started doing daily practice problems on here everyday.

Hi mz19,

Do not take your diagnostic score too seriously. It's just to see where you stand. Your Verbal score is decent and your quant score could have been better. So, start by studying the concepts and the methodology of each topic. Only after you are done with these two, you have to move to practicing questions of that topic (You can use the official guides at this stage). GMAT is not a typical test in which just the conceptual knowledge is tested. It tests your application skills along with the conceptual knowledge. So, without learning the right methodology to solve questions, no matter how many questions you practice, your score will most likely remain stagnant. Make sure to focus more on the methodology during your preparation.

The right way to prepare for GMAT:

You can go through the articles below to understand the right way to prepare for GMAT.

How to start your GMAT Preparation?

How to effectively plan your studies for GMAT?

How to score 700+ on GMAT

I would suggest you to choose a resource which can help you with:

  • Concepts
  • Methodology (Most important)
  • Standard questions
  • Their detailed solutions
  • Study plan

Preparing for GMAT is already a tedious task and you wouldn't want to spend the time you have in planning what to study and sorting out things. Having a clear idea of what to study on a day will make life easy for you. So, choose a resource which can provide you with a study plan.

The best thing to do would be to check out the free trials of the online courses out there and choose the one which suits you the most. But make sure you choose the one which can help you with the above factors. You can check out the below article to know more about the factors to consider while evaluating an online course.

Key factors to consider while evaluating an online course

And I would suggest you to check out the free trial of GMATWhiz before taking a decision. It provides you with a personalized study plan which is integrated with the course. You can also attend our free webinar series that we are currently running to learn a few strategies that will help you solve questions in a methodical way.
