Hi mbaMission,
I want to apply to some top MBA programs, but I'm not too sure of my chances. Could anyone kindly give my profile an honest evaluation? Well here goes...
I graduated in 2010 with a BS in electrical engineering. Originally though, I had transferred from an SF community college to UCLA. During my UCLA days, I drove back to SF every weekend to spend time with my ailing (now late) father. This coupled with the increased academic rigor really battered my GPA.
Demographic: 26 year old, Chinese-American male, from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background.
Community College (lower div EE): cGPA 3.74,
UCLA (upper div EE): cGPA: 2.91
Total Ugrad GPA: 3.33 (is averaging CC & UCLA gpas fair game for an aggregate calculation?)
GMAT: Balanced 710
Part time MS.ElecEng program: 3.90 - (In progress. Can this double as an academic rebound indicator?)
Work Experience: My work experience has been primarily technical with a large emphasis on EE design and cross-functional project management at a fortune 150 tech firm. For what it's worth, I've attained 2 technical-tracked promotions in my 4 years out of school. My annual salary is $95k.
Extra-curriculars: During my college years, I logged over 100 hours as a phys/chem/math volunteer tutor. Nowadays, outside of my 65 hr weeks and grad engineering tasks, I don't have too much time outside of work. However, I am one of the leaders of the young professionals organization at work and the president of the basketball club. I'm also a recreational painter and HAM radio enthusiast.
Goal: Tech Product Management, or Tech oriented IB/VC.
Given the brief bio-sketch above, how competitive could I be in the top 20 app pool? My main targets are Cornell, NYU, Columbia, & Duke.

Thanks for posting. You've got the following strengths going for you as I see it:
-respectable GMAT
-nice masters degree GPA
-solid work experience (though so technically focused, will need to be sure to show some leadership/teamwork if possible too)
-extracurricular involvement (both the tutoring during school and current activities)
-demographic/slightly less represented potentially
And the following challenges:
-certainly the undergrad GPA
-as mentioned above, need to be sure you can demonstrate leadership/management potential; communication skills; teamwork skill; etc--- think about what you can show that is above and beyond technical skills since those will already be obvious
Unknowns:
-essays/recommendations/interviews
-more about your work accomplishments/details etc
Overall you have a solid profile, and yes more recent strong grades will help the lower ones, plus you can address briefly in the optional essay. I would say within top 20 programs you would have a shot, yes; it may come down to the OTHER applicants you are competing with and how you stack up against them.... generally in terms of experiences you bring to the table, and who you are/how your essays present you as a person and potential class member. Duke, of the 4 you mentioned, would be most in-reach, but you need to think about what schools best fit your goals and what you are looking for and apply to a range for best chances.
