I still think that he's not translating his GPA correctly. Percentiles at IIT schools are much different than GPAs in the USA. He was likely toward the bottom of his class rankings, but that still doesn't mean that he's got the minimum required grades to graduate. Since he's not responding any more in this thread, let's leave it as it is.

On a seperate note .. it seems like many of the Indian applicants are IIT Alums who are ready to move on to different things. In which case, how are folks who did their UG's in the US viewed? I mean it is virtually impossible to compare an Indian UG experience with a US one so are the applicants separated out even within countries?

thoughts?

Im on the other end of the spectrum. Average GPA (3.49) low GMAT Scores (440). Not shooting at any elite schools. Wondering if I have a shot. Oh the headache!

I have come across a TON of Indian born applicants/students who have done their UG in the US. I feel that they are treated more or less like the rest of the population. The main thing though I feel is that the adcoms dont have to worry about converting GPA's etc. They know the academic capabilities of such an applicant. But at the same time, they are adding to their international students "number".

Does this apply to US citizens of Indian origin as well? I would think not.

Hey Pelihu,

A very detailed and insightful response you gave for an important question. I have question for you and after reading this reply from you, I believe you can give me an unbiased reality scenario for my profile.

I did UG in Chemical engg from IIT Delhi, India and came out with a really bad GPA 2.7 :( thanks to my screwed up initial years of UG. In my Final year I improved my grades and also did a good project, which was presented as paper in AICHE US conference and I got nomination call for outstanding student of the year for the project in energy/environment at UG level. I didn't get it finally because I was not enrolled for Phd

Why I didn't go for PHd because I got selected by a French MNC leader in its field ( I wont mention name) for its international program in the midst of tough competition and got a direct posting in Houston. It was a prestigious program which generally takes candidates from MIT/ Stanford in the US and leading schools in Europe.

I got good ( I think so at least) international exposure in the US for two years. I had to come back to India due to some unforeseen serious family problems. But I was offered a good role by my company in Business line in its India office. Since then, for almost two years I have been working in BZ Dev team, I have secured one promotion already to a managerial position and working closely with TOP executives of company.

EC: Editor of publications, pulic speaking ex from school to university, Joined Toastmasters but left it as I found it kind of dumb and unnecessarily too disciplined.
and Yes GMAT I took 2 days ago: 730

So a really BAD GPA
But good school
good graduate project
Ok GMAT
Diversified Work ex
Hopefully Good recos

Do I have some good chance or just a fat chance for some top schools.

Sorry for being too elaborate.
