HI BK,

Using this 500 as a 'baseline' score, you're probably going to need more than 1 month of study to hit your goal score. It also sounds like you used a 'book-heavy' approach; Test Takers who study in that way often get "stuck" at a particular scoring level.

To increase your score to 650+, you're probably going to need to invest in a Course of some type (either Guided Self-Study or Instructor-Led) and spend at least 2 months continuing to study. Since you're stronger in the Quant section, we should look to get as many 'easy' extra points out of that section of the GMAT as possible because it will take a lot of work to raise a V17 to the level that you need to raise it to.

I have a few questions about your Official GMAT:

1) Did you finish any sections early? Did you run out of time and have to rush through any sections (and guess on a bunch of questions)? Did you leave any questions unanswered?
2) What time of day and day of the week did you take your GMAT?
3) How long was the ride to the Testing Center from your home?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hello Rich,

Yes have left some question unanswered. There were about 9 to 10 questions which i have marked just like that.Towards the end of the test , my mind was totally blank and there was time in between the test when i was not even able to read or understand properly that what is written in the screen. Then i waited for 30 secs ...closed my eyes ..concentrated and started all over again.I was intimated by the 4th RC ..it was bit longer one.I just skimmed the passage and some how answered the RC questions.I was left with 15 mins with 10 questions to be answered.
I have taken the GMAT on sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm.Testing Center is 15 kms from my house.

What i have experienced is that the practice exam of Manhatan is much the real GMAT .I guess i need to work a lot on how to improve focus and stay clam throughot the test.

Hi Guys,

Today i have given gmat, but scored really lower than my practice exam .I scored 500. ut i am having work of 11 + years in the field of analytics.
Like many of us , i too want to join top business school. But i am not able to decide of i should apply with score or shall i retake GMAT after a month or so.
Experts ..Please suggest...I am really worried.

Many Thanks,
BK

Until and unless you have a unique stellar profile, getting admission into the PGPX courses of IIMs or ISB or top 20 schools in the world with a 500 on GMAT will be very hard. By scoring well on GMAT, you convince the school of your ability to not only handle the curriculum but also put in hours of study time - something you wouldn't have done for the past 11 yrs. So in my opinion, a retake is desirable.

If you do decide to retake, then the next question would be - how to prepare to get a 700+ score. Both Quant and Verbal will need work - of course, Verbal much more so. I would suggest you to join a course/ get a tutor for the right guidance. I assume you haven't 'studied' much in the past 11 yrs and hence would need some time to get back in the flow. A buzzing classroom full of people discussing tests, questions, strategies etc will pique your interest and give you the push and motivation you need.
