Hi davidecallegaro,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day did not go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What specific study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates (or 'approximate' dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC,

Thanks for your help. So, to answer your questions:

1) I stayed consistently to 4h a day, about 8 on test days (5h extra to review questions). In the last couple of weeks, I had to put it away due to other duties.

2) I used the Official Guide 21 (done all + redone incorrect questions), Verbal and Quant Official Review (done twice + reviewed some incorrect questions), Official Advanced questions, had access to MGMAT All XYZ books (did only part of All Verbal volume), and covered once the Grammar Book by GMATCLUB. Other than that, 12 tests, 6 from GMAC, 6 from MGMAT.

3)
GMAT PREP 1 690 (Q47,V38), IR 8
GMAT PREP 2 650 (Q43,V37), IR 8
MGMAT 1 660 (Q44,V36), IR 5-7 8/10
GMAT PREP 1 770 (Q49,V47), IR 8 8/14
GMAT PREP 2 750 (Q49,V42), IR 8 8/20
GMAT PREP 3 730 (Q49,V39), IR 8 9/6
MGMAT 2 640 (Q45,V32), IR 6-7 9/11
MGMAT 3 680 (Q46,V36), IR 5-7 9/13
MGMAT 4 680 (Q43,V39), IR 5-7 9/17
GMAT PREP 4 730 (Q50,V39), IR 8 9/22
MGMAT 5 690 (Q45,V38), IR 3-5 9/23
MGMAT 6 680 (Q44, V38) IR 4-6 9/25
GMAT PREP 5 660 (Q50,V30), IR 5 9/27
GMAT PREP 6 690 (Q49,V34), IR 8 10/3

TEST DAY GMAT 630(Q45,V31), IR 8 10/5

4) I am aiming 730+ (M7 target score).

5) Not applying to any school at the moment, I am taking advantage of the GMAT ONLINE way. I would say in a couple of years I will present my application. Just want to have my GMAT done so it won't bother anymore!

I’m sorry to hear how things went with your GMAT.

Assuming that you took your official practice exams under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than 630. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves, stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Although I’m unsure of how you prepared, it’s possible that, in your preparation, particularly in verbal, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your preparation, particularly for verbal, probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new quant and verbal materials, so take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses.
