Hi raarun

You can solve the equation this way, but the way is not to substitute the answer. Here you are considering N as number of pages and question is asking for number of days. So fits you need to solve the equation, which will give you the Number of pages as 32 pages/day.

Now the total number of pages has to be divided by 32 pages/day to get number of days as 15. Hope it is clear for you now.

Why cant this be solved by the following equation
\(\frac{480}{N} -\frac{480}{N+16} =5\)

I like the solution - it’s helpful. I usually like to go the quadratic route in this questions, and stop the algebra just before setting up the quadratic.

Consider D(Days) and P(Pages)

DP=480
(D-5)(P+16)=480

DP=DP+16D-5P-80
0=16D-5P-80

Replace P for (480/D)

0=16D-5(480/D)-80

Plug answer choices B and D to find the answer. If plugging results in a number above 0, then A is the answer choice. But in this case B gives me a negative.

Try D, If my result is still negative, then the answer is E. If its above 0, then C is the sweet spot. which is the case in this question
