I did not quite understand the solution. Does it matter that x = 1 is positive but -(x-2) is negative? Or I dont have to test the value in this case?
No. For x = 1,

-(x - 2) = -(1 - 2) = -(-1) = 1.

So it is actually positive and equals x.

I did not quite understand the solution. why can x not be negative
Because |x - 2| is an absolute value, it can never be negative.

But the equation says:

|x - 2| = x

So x must equal a nonnegative number. Therefore, x itself cannot be negative.
