I don’t quite agree with the solution. let's say x is the rate for first day, and t is first day time and t' is second day time:
xt + x(t'-8) = 240
t + t' = 14

solving these 2 equations we get,
(14x - 240)/8 = t' as time has to be positive then only value that satisfies it is x= 19.

am i doing something wrong here???

Yes, you are making a mistake. You defined x as the first-day rate, but 9, 14, and 19 are the proposed second-day rates, so you cannot substitute those values for x.

Also, the second-day work should be written as (x - 8)t', not x(t' - 8), since 8 is subtracted from the rate, not from the time.
