Use the following thought diagram without using calculus,
1. Any quadratic equation ( which is never straight line always a curve ) gets minimum at when its value is 0 in XY plane which is ++ quadrant or 1 st quadrant ( no -ve values in it )
2. your equation cant get 0 twice since it gets minimum in 1st quadrant ( imagine a curve reaching min value in 1st quadrant - it would be just one point ) HENCE it has only one root HENCE the roots of this quad eq -(b)/2a

Either no one has come up with the right explanation, or this question is completely out of scope. I'm sure GMAT doesn't assume that we know calculus or the formula of vortex on the test. This question convinced me not to purchase this test prep.

I think this is a high-quality question and I agree with explanation. I have a doubt. What is its a downward opening parabola? In the solution its already assumed that its a upward opening parabola and so vertex in the minimum point.
