Magoosh - Doing Practice Problems Before "Learning" Subject Matter  [#permalink]

Hi,

I'm just starting out on my GMAT prep. I'm using Magoosh, and am following one of their study plans.

As part of the study plan, you are instructed to do practice questions. The practice questions on the Magoosh platform are random. Therefore, for PS, I get questions on geometry, algebra, exponents, etc. However, when I am doing practice problems, I am often being quizzed on topics I have not yet learned. For example, I did a question on geometry and polygons today. Unsurprisingly, I got it wrong, as I have not taken the geometry lessons yet.

One option would be to watch the "related lessons" videos, and brush up on that specific area of geometry. However, that seems a bit useless where the lesson will likely build on knowledge from a previous lesson that i have not yet taken. Essentially, I'd be skipping ahead, and doing one question in a certain area could require hours of learning to move on, essentially randomizing the order of the study plan.

The other option, however, is simply to shrug it off and say "damn, didn't know that, guess I'll learn it when I get there." This option seems useless too, as I'm just burning questions and not really developing a substantive understanding of why I got the question wrong.

Does anyone have a suggestion? Sorry if I missed a sticky or something that addresses this. Thanks.

I used Magoosh before and tried to follow its study plan. However, I couldn’t follow more than a week. I then watched all of its videos which are very helpful, especially in quantitative and SC. Only tried to solve all quizzes after each module during this learning. After that, I started to solve problems it has and watch its explanation video. I repeat learning video and solving problems 2-3 times. Now I focus on OG problems. I think it’s waste of time when try to solve problems that we don’t have basic knowledge. Hope this help!

I would never prefer jumping to practice material until your basics are clear.

Focus on basics and do only those questions that are followed after Magoosh videos.

Once you go through the entire material, revise everything and then jump to questions.

All the best :)

You can control the quant subjects that you practice on Magoosh, if you select "Custom Practice".

I have been using free offers and experienced the same problem -- facing problems for which I have not yet prepared. I have also been reading lessons from used prep books purchased from eBay. I then choose appropriate questions from this site. I have not yet committed to buying a prep package.
