POE:

We are already comparing by mentioning "more than" in the non underlined part. Hence, another "than" is redundant.
Eliminate A,E

In B, "as it did" is wrong tense

In D, "had escaped" is wrong tense.

C is our winner

IMHO:-

Comparison ... times as XXXX as

A & E uses than.
B:- usage of "it" is wrong
D:- Past perfect had evolved is wrong for latest event.
C:- Correct
