Many universities offer two types of learning: frontal, in-class lectures and virtual classes that are a review of the in-class lectures. Research into the concentration ability of students in today's tech savvy world has found that students are less likely to text messages on their phones during the virtual classes than they are during the real classes. However, it has also been determined that students' attention spans are higher in real classes than they are in the virtual classes.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must be true?

A. Texting on one's phone during in-class lectures is an activity that students are fully concentrated on.

B. The amount of attention span is directly proportional to how interesting a lecture or virtual lesson may be.

C. The level of success a class has in terms of catching student attention is not necessarily lower when students text messages.

D. Between the two types of classes, students will get enough information to help them pass a class.

E. It is unnecessary to be fully concentrated in both types of classes.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Many universities offer two types of learning: frontal, in-class lectures and virtual classes that are a review of the in-class lectures. Research into the concentration ability of students in today's tech savvy world has found that students are less likely to text messages on their phones during the virtual classes than they are during the real classes. However, it has also been determined that students' attention spans are higher in real classes than they are in the virtual classes.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must be true?

A. Texting on one's phone during in-class lectures is an activity that students are fully concentrated on.

Incorrect.

This is an Inference question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a conclusion stemming from those premises

Premise A: Universities offer in-class lectures and also virtual classes which review the in class material.
    +
Premise B: Students will text phone messages less during virtual classes than lectures.
    +
Premise C: Student attention span is higher in lectures.
    =
    Conclusion: ?

The argument does not provide us with any information about how concentrated students are while texting.

Remember that in Inference questions you are asked to make an inference based on existing premises; the right answer cannot reveal new data - it can only draw a conclusion based on the data provided.

B. The amount of attention span is directly proportional to how interesting a lecture or virtual lesson may be.

Incorrect.

Since we are not given data about the relationship between attention span and level of interest, this answer choice strays too far from the original premises.

C. The level of success a class has in terms of catching student attention is not necessarily lower when students text messages.

This answer choice correctly concludes that texting does not necessarily have a negative effect on how successful a class is in terms of student attention span; we know that students text more in real classes yet they also pay more attention in those classes. Texting might have a positive effect on attention, if any.

D. Between the two types of classes, students will get enough information to help them pass a class.

This answer choice strays too far from the premises which do not provide information about the amount of information a student may or may not get from those classes.

E. It is unnecessary to be fully concentrated in both types of classes.

Incorrect.

The necessity of being fully concentrated is not discussed in the premises; we are not told just how concentrated a student needs to be (that is defined by what the student wants to achieve). Therefore, we cannot conclude anything about such a necessity.
