I need small help in understanding parallelism.

Sentence - Ralph likes a variety of people, including those who are popular and who are not.
Doubt -
1. is this incorrect because after and those will be required to make X||Y[Those who are popular || Those who are not popular]
2.Can't we consider those common to both modifiers who are popular and who are not popular? If not, then why?

Hello GMATyodasimran,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, as KarishmaB has written, "those" does indeed need to be repeated; any elements linked by conjunction must be parallel, and in this case the first element is the pronoun phrase "those who are popular".

We hope this helps.
All the best!

Hi GMATyodasimran,

We're not really looking at parallelism here. This is more about meaning.

1a. those who donate to charity and who open their doors to refugees ← In this case, we're looking at one group of people (those).

To maintain the intended meaning, we must not add another those after and. However, we may or may not keep the second who, depending on how complicated we think the sentence is. In this case, we can absolutely drop the second who.

1b. those who donate to charity and open their doors to refugees ← Dropping the second who is not a problem, because the list is really short.

However, if we're looking at different groups of people, we can't use the same those to refer to both groups.

2a. those who donate to charity and those who open their doors to refugees ← There's no guaranteed overlap between the two groups here.

In your example, there is no overlap between the two groups {those who are popular} and {those who are not (popular)}. This means we should not expect to be able to use only one those.

2b. those who are popular and who are not ← Because the two descriptive elements are mutually exclusive, we should not use only one those.
