👉 GMAT Verbal Trap Choices ❎ Vs. Correct Answers ✅
If you often find yourself stuck between two answer choices, it may be that you need to work on thinking in a deeper, more detailed way about why incorrect choices are incorrect and correct answers are correct. This type of analysis is particularly important because many trap choices in GMAT Verbal rely on shallow analysis.
When you’re solving Verbal questions, you must consider whether you’re performing a detailed analysis of each answer choice, or relying on shallow analysis that may allow you to fall for trap choices. In RC, are you fully analyzing the degree to which each choice is supported by the passage, or are you looking for answer choices that simply match the wording of the passage (a common trap)?
In SC, are you evaluating the logic and analyzing the details of each answer choice, or are you quickly eliminating choices that seem a little awkward, and then choosing the choice that “sounds right”? In CR, are you fully analyzing the logical relationships between the choices and the passages, or are you considering only topic or the presence of certain keywords? The answers to these questions will often determine whether you end up choosing a trap choice or a correct answer.
As a corollary to getting rid of the need to be perfect, you can leverage what is known as the compound effect.
