Hi guys,

I am a little conflicted... would like some insight into my plan.

My background:
I just graduated double major in economics and philosophy from a top 20 undergrad school.
Recently received an offer to work as a financial analyst for a major hospital.
This hospital will fully reimburse masters program tuition as they are partnered up with a university (not top program...)

My goal is to get into the top MBA programs but my undergrad GPA was a measly 2.89. I know that even with a 700+ gmat score I will not be competitive enough for top MBA programs.

So I am thinking of taking advantage of the MSF program which is 30 credits - I'll be going to school part time, work hard to receive a really high GPA and apply to top MBA programs after I get maybe 2-3 more years of work experience.

Does this make sense? Do people get MSF and an MBA? Will it even help? Ugh...all these thoughts are running through my mind and I decided to ask you guys.

Appreciate any advice that I can get...If you have gone through a similar situation please message me. Would love to talk

I think generally I tell people to go to the program that best positions themselves to reach their goals. There is a bit of overlap between the programs but not much as a MSF is really focused more in the technical side of finance and b-school is more expansive and geared towards developing leaders. Given your GPA this may make sense for you but keep in mind if you want to pursue finance post MBA your story will need to reflect why given you already have a masters in finance so just keep that in mind

Hi there,

I would like your opinion and career advice.

Currently in 3rd year of Electrical & Electronic Engineering of my Undergrad in Singapore. I will be 25 yrs old when I graduate in June 2018. Not sure whether to do a Masters in Finance after undergrad or to do a MBA after some work experience. I want to do my MS or MBA in the top 20 schools. I have a strong passion for quant, automobiles and tech. Planning to take the GMAT this December.

Post-MBA I would like to pursue corporate finance/general management programs.

Would it be better to get my MS in Finance and then work for two to three years and then apply for an MBA after? I have also done 2 yrs of military service.

Or would it be better to pursue an MBA directly after a few years?

I am in kinda the same boat. When I went to undergrad I majored in Economics and Accounting. Now I want to pursue a MBA but conflicted in a MBA from a top 10 school or a double major like MBA and MF. Which is better for my career in Finance.

The Bottom Line
Graduates of both MBA and MF programs can expect a quality education that can't help but further their career paths.

While an MBA offers more flexibility in terms of curriculum and ability to take classes part-time, it is becoming a more crowded space while business schools are becoming more competitive. A Master of Finance is a good alternative for students seeking a finance-specific career, while devoting only one year to earning their degree.
