The ratio of brown eggs to white eggs in a basket is 1.5 to 1.8.if there are fewer than 25 brown eggs in the basket, what is the highest possible number of total eggs in the basket?
(A)22
(B)24
(C)44
(D)55
(E)60
Please explain sir
IMO, (C) is the answer.
Let the number of brown eggs = b
and the number of white eggs = w
It is given that, \(\frac{b}{w}\) = \(\frac{1.5}{1.8}\) = \(\frac{5}{6}\)
So, we can say that b should be a multiple of 5 and w should be a multiple of 6.
Now, b<25. Now to maximise the total number of eggs, we should maximise b. The next maximum value that b can take is 20. Since, b should be a multiple of 5. If b = 20 then, w = 24.
Thus, highest possible total number of eggs = 20+24 = 44
So, (C) is the answer.
