an overnight courier charges $5 for first 2 ounces of a package & $ 0.75 for each additional oune. if thr r 6 % sales tax added to this charges , how much does it cost to send 6 ounce package?
a) $ 4.24
b) $ 8.00
c) $ 8.48
d) $ 9.28
e) $ 10.60

Ok so lets set it up with algebra. (($5 for the first two ounces)+ ((Total # of ounces minus the first two ounces) * $.75/ounce)))*106%= Cost So...

Where n= total number of Ounces shipped
($5+(n-2).75)1.06= Cost
(8*1.06)= $8.48 (C)

Pls help:
if a question ask "courier service charge for first 2 ounces as $5 and for every additional its 0.75$ then how mch for 6-ounces. shouldnt i calculate first 2 @ $ 5 +rest 4 @ 5.75?

Its (5 + 0.75*4) + (5 + 0.75*4) * 0.06 = 8.48 which is C.

You have A as ans, it is wrong.

Question says $5 for first 2 ounces
$0.75 for each additional ounce

so we should use $5 flat rate for first 2 ounces and last 4 ounce @ 0.75/ounce ( not $5.75 . you should do that only if the question says that additional ounces cost = some base price + additional charge)

total courier charges = 5 + 4 *0.75 = $8

sales tax = (6/100)*8 = 0.48

total cost = 8.48

Answer is C.
