Hi,
I decided in July this year, to pursue an MBA in 2015. Fast forward to the present and I have a 660 (IR5,Q41,V39) score for my GMAT (2nd attempt). My first attempt at the GMAT only yielded a 620, largely due to nerves. Both times, my main problem lay in lack of timing discipline. I may take the GMAT again, as I am certain that I can hit 700 but there is not enough time to lock in this score for the round two applications.
I am a South-East Asian Chinese woman, with a post-graduate Legal Practice Course certificate (this is a professional diploma in practical legal skills) and a Law LLB undergraduate degree at a good university (a top 10 university during my time there). Unfortunately, because I had come from a very strict, sheltered, traditional background before being sent halfway across the world, alone, to university, I went crazy and spent more time partying than studying. As a result, I ended up with a 2:2, in spite of promising results in the first semester.
Briefly, the things in my favour are as follows:
- I am a sole in-house lawyer, a member of senior management, with 6-7 years' experience in total;
- I created the legal department from scratch in my current job;
- I currently have one assistant lawyer under my charge;
- I have experience from several different industries and in a previous role, I led the legal team in the chief legal counsel's absence;
- I have a history of managing many multi-million dollar, high-level deals independently but also have a good record of working well across all departments, with both internal and external parties (many co-workers and business associates from my previous jobs have become firm friends);
- Although my area of expertise is mainly law, I have plenty of business exposure, since my work requires me to have a good understanding of general business principles and the industry in which I work.
- I am currently working on a potential start-up, on the side.
- I work with parties and contracts from numerous different jurisdictions, from Asia, the Middle-East, the U.S., Europe and Africa. My work also brings me to different countries and I have lived and worked in Asia and Europe.
I should be grateful if you could let me know whether I have any chance of getting into LBS, HBS or Standford at all and what I should do about increasing my chances.

Hey there!
So, first of all, Bschools like lawyers. Esp. when they are working in corporate. I'd need a bit more detail about your employer and your projects to really dig in, but let's say it looks mighty good.
Good enough for HBS/Stanford/LBS? Frankly, with your GMAT and GPA these schools are basically totally out of range. I don't mean to sound harsh, but your whooole MBA application experience will go easier if you accept this. HBS accepts like 2-3 people per year out of a thousand with a GPA lower than 3.0. (and not so many in the 3-3.5 range either). Why? Because they don't have to compromise.
And if you start at this point concentrating on schools in the 10-30 range, you will fare better.
However, now the question becomes: Do you apply this year? You have little time, which means you can make something like TWO applications before deadlines. Another option would be waiting until next year and applying to 6-7 schools R1. (Which would also give you the time to retake the GMAT. Which is better? You have to tell me which one fits in to your goals, and we can work from there.

Thanks for the honest advice. How much of a difference do you think my getting a GMAT score of above 700 would make, should I wish to attend LBS? And what kind of GMAT will I need, in order to stand a good chance?
As for my employer and the kind of projects I do, my company is part of a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate, with stakes in several different industries. Although my company itself is small, it is growing rapidly and I am work on matters that involve the ultimate parent companies as well. I am in charge of the EMEA region and work on anything from investment trust due diligence to share/property acquisitions, to dispute resolution. I also cover company secretary work, craft best practice policies and have a record of working for listed companies.
