Hi guys,
I did my undergrad at a TOP 25 US college, earned a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.A. in Mathematics (undergrad GPA: 3.47) and subsequently earned a M.S. in Financial Engineering.
However, at the time, I had 'too much a personality' to work anyone. I ended up joining in the family business (import/export intl trading) in Asia. Over the past three years, I build relationships with some large New York clients, and grew the business three-fold. But as the business environment become more cutthroat, I felt I am hitting a wall. I have been trying ways to diversify and transform the business, however, but none of the things has worked out so far.
So this year, my parents ask me to get an MBA to hopefully expand my skill set and network with more people. And I sat for GMAT exam last month and got 750 (Q51, V40).
However, from I read on this forum, many top school applicants not only have good GMAT score, stellar GPA, but also have past experience in IB, Consulting and some even had PE background.
After MBA, I am looking to work in finance for two years in the US, before moving back to Asia.
I am only targeting top 15 schools. Given that we are approaching of R3 deadline, and I haven't started any of my applications, could someone please give me some advice?

Hey Willie,
Sooo first of all, congrats on that fantastic GMAT! Well-done!
Second, forget about R3. It's over. Plus R3 Top 15 schools is reeeeal hard even for the better candidates. The good news is that you are gonna be ready to rip for R1 next year.
Since you are coming in from a family business the things the schools will look at most are: what you do, what you have done, what you want to do. And of course the size, influence, market share, and profitability of your family run business will count for a LOT! And basically the bigger, the better (which doesn't necessarily mean that small is bad - I've seen a lot of good folks from small= mid-size family businesses do real well, but big is real good).
As for your goals, let's think about that also in terms of your family business - what I mean is that it all needs to be connected. If your family is totally in a non-finance business, then I think you gotta reconsider those goals.

Hi there,
Thanks for sharing your profile. Congrats on a great GMAT score. A 750 combined with a nice GPA from a good school certainly puts you in the conversation at many top schools. I wouldn't be too concerned about comparing your background or work experience with those from banking or consulting as you'll be compared to a different pool of people. The key will be to make sure your story is unique and genuine. Since your experience is limited to a family-run business, you will need to clearly demonstrate your impact. What did you achieve? What were you responsible for? Are you prepared to handle more accountability?
Further, it's clear that you've thought about your goals. But, it would be great to better understand why finance is a focus of yours. Is your firm in the finance business or are you anticipating that you'll eventually lead that function of your organization?
As Jon mentioned, the benefit you have now is that time is on your side. You should dedicate the next few months planning for your R1 applications.
