I am planning for MBA in Canada and so for that I had appeared for GRE last month. Majority of the universities in Canada accept both GRE and GMAT as one of the admission requirements and therefore with one or two more reasons, chose GRE over GMAT. My GRE score was 305 (148V, 157Q) which converted to 530 GMAT. I just lagged by a 2-3 marks in GRE in order to attain 550 in GMAT which is minimum requirement in many universities. Also, I would not be taking GRE/GMAT again.
My concern here is:
1) The first tier and even the fourth tier universities have a same minimum requirement of GMAT score i.e. 550. So, regardless of seeing the minimum requirement, should I apply to universities of lower tier? (I do have a decent overall profile) Would the admission commitee even take my application into consideration?
2) Can a good IELTS band compensate a low Verbal score in GRE?
Also, please suggest some shortlisted universities with the above score.
Thanks in advance!
I have thousands of questions running through my mind but right now, I would ask these two. Please provide your views/suggestions/experiences.
Hello
FenyYou are right, your GRE score does translate to 530 on GMAT.
However, I will reveal you one secret, it use to be not so strict translation, with option +- 50 pints attached to the score.
So you still qualify in eyes of admission officers.
Regarding your questions....yes that is Canada...it is not like in US...where you have universities more structured in terms of proclaimed admission requests.
IELTS/TOEFL score comes just as request to surpass some threshold...like 90 or 100.
Yes it would have positive impact on your application if you score higher in comparison to your verbal GRE.
Verbal GRE is not designed for business schools anyway...so in that terms you made a wrong choice choosing GRE over GMAT.
Here are average GMAT score of some of top Canadian programs as guidance :
University of Toronto (Rotman) 672
McGill University-Desautels 655
University of Western Ontario (Ivey) 655
Queen’s University 650
Univ of British Columbia (Sauder) 646
HEC Montréal 638
DeGroote School of Business McMaster University 627
John Molson School of Business Concordia University 625
University of Alberta 623
Ted Rogers School of Management Ryerson University 614
Telfer School of Management University of Ottawa 613
Sprott School of Business Carleton University 612
Sobey School of Business Saint Mary’s University 610
Haskayne School of Business University of Calgary 609
Lazaridis School of Business and Economics Wilfrid Laurier University 603
Beedie School of Business Simon Fraser University 600
Don’t assume that the average score represents the whole picture at all.
The range of GMAT scores may vary a lot, and indeed does vary a lot.
The difference between the minimum and maximum could be over a 100 points and usually is.
Good Luck !
