I'll have to check when I get back home.

Just to clarify, the ranking above only relates to international business. I have a poor understanding of what "international business" really is, so I'm not even sure it has anything to do with economics or economic development.

Thunderbird is indeed a great south-western regional school for international business. I have visited the campus (twice) and spoken candidly with the Dean of Admissions.

IMHO the reason why Business Week and US NWR singles out T-bird as the #1 international biz school is because:

1) ~65% of the student body is international
2) proficiency in a foreign language is REQUIRED before graduation
3) the campus is very small and stands alone - not part of a larger institution.
4) the school only offers three concentrations: global management/marketing/finance.
5) it was founded nearly 60 years ago

As much as I am impressed by the school, I just can't understand how it can admit 85% of its applicants and still be labeled #1 :?:

Wharton/Lauder has the same requirements and admits less than a fourth of its applicants.

Yeah, that may be a published ranking but its sort of bogus. If you wanted to study international business and had to chose between Thunderbird and Wharton or Columbia it would be a no-brainer. Schools like TB and SC are basically famous for one thing - international business. So when people are surveyed on what the top int'l business schools are then they'll get more mentions than schools that are strong accross the board. Its the same deal with other concentrations, e.g. Babson in entrepreneurship.

hey guys,
I'm particularly interested in these international programs. I'm think i'm going to apply to some of the ultraelites (H/S/W/K/CH), and I know that all of them have international concentrations, but in a couple of cases it seems that there are specific international programs available (W/Lauder and Chicago IMBA). I can't see anything like that for S/H/K
Now, I see that Penn is after TB in these rankings, and everyone knows that W>>>TB so does that mean that the Lauder program is significantly worse than the normal MBA?!?
Does anybody know what the admission criteria are for Lauder and IMBA? I mean the language requirement is just on top of everything else or since the program is different you're competing against a different pool of applicants? That's not really clear in their websites (W and CH)
Thanks!

For the Lauder program you need to be accepted by both the MBA and the Lauder Institute. So it is possible to get into the MBA and not into Lauder.

The admission criteria for Lauder depends on your language track. Spanish and Italian speakers can get into the Portuguese program without taking a test. For other languages, you must have an intermediate/advance level. The language is a small part (yet fundamental) of the Lauder. Lauder concentrates a lot on studying and understanding the culture and business environment of the area of the world you are interested in.

Another criteria is to have some kind of international experience.

Sorry to be a little off-topic, but isn't Thunderbird a weird name for a school? If I were starting a school I would give it a preppy sounding name, or a name that's tied to a prominent city.

(And before someone posts a link to wikipedia, I've already checked it out, the school was named after an old airbase it was built on top of).

thanks a lot :)
Are you attending the Lauder? I'm now afraid that the ma takes away all the time you would spend on clubs/events/extracurriculars otherwise, am I correct?
