This global transfer service is even better than I thought.

After receiving my SSN (just a few weeks ago) I called the AMEX customer service and asked them to report to my credit report using my newly received SSN. It turns out that they reported the long history of payments to my AMEX.

Look at your "member since" year on your AMEX card - they report all your payments from that year. I now have 700+ score and a good credit history in the US, who would have thougut.

There are a lot of bad things to say about AMEX, but this has totally surprised me.

I got that SSN years ago, when I was a kid my father was teaching in the US. We all received SSNs, mine is a weird SSN that is written on a card that says "not valid for employment" on it.

Today, without an SSN or special arrangements it's difficult to get a normal credit card in the US. if you are currently banking with a bank that is also operating in the US, you may be able to use your history with the bank to receive a bank backed credit card - I know that HSBC and UBS used to that and they might still be able to do that now.

Thanks zbaboor,

as I am the recipient of a fellowship at Wharton, I am planning to get an ITIN to claim my fellowship as tax-exempt income: there's no need at all for this, but it will give me an ITIN to match my AmEx credit history to. It's that convoluted!
