Many a times, while communicating with new MBA admits, especially from the Top ranked colleges, I find a common question: 1) What will an MBA program give me in one year what I haven’t been able to gain in last x no. of years of professional life? 2) why are cos. ready to hire you at exponential remuneration. While I must say that I have met many non-MBA professionals/entrepreneurs as well, who are born with such innate skillsets so to say, but for many these are not inherent but acquired and developed over time.
So here are my five key responses:
• Fueling up your communication skills
Come what may, the MBA smarts you up – aids you get better at structured thinking, holistic answering and enhancing your written communication! Myriad opportunities like B School case competitions, toastmasters club, external engagements, classroom presentations and yes! the loads of interview prep, cover note writing experiences are here to firm you up at 100x speed and you will learn so much faster than you would have in the real world!
• Adorning the leadership skills/potential
Most B-Schools take you in for your leadership potential. In these few months, the 360 degree experiences, enhances you as an individual into a better leader, better professional and a better human being in most case. In fact, this is probably the only time in life where you are SURROUNDED by so many SMART folks from various spheres of life! In fact, this is the place probably where you would TRULY realize what are your unique SMART strengths as you would get truly tested every second!
• Helps zoom in, into your thought process and choose what you really want
Though many folks write a truly compelling post MBA goal application essay, most folks are still figuring it out. The plethora of choices offered, will help carve out a clear focus, what your TRUE desire is, and in many ways, could help you actually steer yourself towards that liking even if you have a clearly different experience graph! Say from marketing to operations!
• Gives you complete teaser across hard skills
I can’t imagine sometimes, how the few weeks of Statistics and Macroeconomics that has helped me even till date. Irrespective of what field you come from, the core mandatory courses give you enough fuel to move successfully for the rest of your professional journey. From HR to Marketing to Supply Chain to Finance – the basic core concepts you will surely learn.
• Creates a lifetime of network
THIS IS A WINNER! Yes, a lifetime of network is what you get – and you get it for the simplest of things sometimes. Be it a situation in life where you are in a stuck in a foreign country and you reach out to your alumni network to help you out, to even helping family members through medical situations – way beyond professional help for sure! That’s what a real network is and that’s what a top-notch MBA program network gives you!
And I did skip the credibility that you gain with a brand of alma mater like this, the 4x -5x growth that you get in your compensation post your course etc. or the amount of attention and reach to investors you could get for a business you are looking to launch post that! So, is there anyone who doesn’t gain from an MBA? I would think – surely difficult to answer!
