I am going to be completing my undergraduate studies this coming may from a top 10 public university. I will graduate Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honors) as a BS in Business Administration. I recently accepted a consulting position with a well-respected Consulting Practice. I am thinking about taking the GMAT at graduation, and applying to MBA programs in 4-5 years or so. To get into a top 20 program, will I need to "ACE" the GMAT or would my work experience (and assuming good recommendations go along with that) and good undergrad grades make up for a "lower than average" GMAT score (I.E. scoring in the 600s rather than in the 700s)? I know other factors such as essays, interviews, etc. play a role as well. As far out as I am, I just want to get a general sense of what my expectations for the GMAT should be in light of my current profile.

Well you are off to an excellent start. With a summa cum laude from a top 10 + a nice beginning in a consulting firm, you are actually all set on the way towards building yourself the strongest possible application as you work towards business-school. for the GMAT - the answer is simple - take it until you get the highest score you can. If you are aiming for Top 10 schools, a 700+ is great, a 720 or higher, even better. And since you have the unchangeable things (alma mater, undergrad GPA, first job) all set up perfectly, you just keep retaking the GMAT if you need to till you get your score.
The other thing is, since you are planning already - think about one if not two community service/volunteer positions that you would be interested in taking and keeping and eventually taking a leadership position in in the next years.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate the feedback. I am not a great standardized tests taker. My SAT score was not as high as most of my peers at my University. So, I am very nervous about the GMAT. Is it possible to get into 10-20 programs (not top 10) with a GMAT score that is in the low to mid 600s? I imagine almost all serious candidates in the top 10 have the work experience, college achievements, and 700+ GMAT scores. But, would I have the ability to make up for a "lower than average" GMAT in a 10-20 school with my other credentials?
