Lost Your Job in the Tech Mess? Go to BSchool Without Taking GMAT
Business Schools offering App Fee Waivers for R2 applicants who have lost their jobs. Many of the schools position it as "US Only" and "Tech Only". I feel they are looking specifically for high caliber "wrongly laid off" workers who would be a great addition to the class and whom they can poach from the cooling job market.
MBA Programs Offering GMAT Waivers to laid Off Tech Workers:
1.
Kellogg - announced Nov 14th2.
Kelley (no instructions or online blog post found - anyone has it handy?)
3.
Sloan extended the R2 deadline to laid off workers (no GMAT waiver though)
4.
Johnson (Cornell) - announced Nov 22, 2022 via LinkedIn
5.
NYU Stern Tech MBA - announced Nov 22, 2022This seems to make sense from the School perspective and from the applicant perspective as well:
1. Usually these would be high quality and high performing applicants with strong brands on their resume (e.g. Twitter, FB, etc)
2. These folks have little to do in the next month except to wait for Jan and potentially score a job then. No hiring happens in the US during December
3. There is little downside to be applying since again, plenty of time, and the only cost is time spent on application and the app fee
4. WSJ even posted an article about Kellogg's move (they came up with the idea first and others followed). Kellogg was also famous/infamous for re-evaluating all of the dinged applicants during the pandemic to the shock of all Waitlisters. They also extended their R3 deadline in 2020 to June so they definitely are focused on increasing their applicant volume. This had a few interesting side effects on their app numbers spiking and crashing.
My thoughts: I am not sure if this is helpful or opportunistic. In some way, it is a nice gesture but in other ways, it seems unfair to all the rest of us who managed to hold our jobs. This also seems to be focused on the US applicants (as many programs specifically mention US Laid off tech workers and some have gone as far as specify employers - Twitter, FB, Amazon)
P.S. Any laid off tech folks here? What are your thoughts?
What about those of us who have not been laid off.... are we to be considered lucky or unlucky?
