With only three weeks until the first major Round 1 deadlines, we are having a lot of conversations with about whether Round 1 is still viable — versus, say, taking a deep breath and running a complete and thorough process for Round 2. (
You can view our Round 1 deadline calendar here, which covers the top 30 U.S. programs and other major international programs.)
In general, that decision depends on (1) whether you already have the scores you need for the schools you're interested in (properly calibrated for your applicant pool, of course!), (2) how far along you are with your resume, essays, and recommenders, (3) how adept you are in crafting and articulating your stories, essays, and application components, (4) how many schools you want to apply to, and (5) when exactly your Round 1 deadlines fall.
On this last point, Round 1 runs from the first week of September to the middle of October. This year, Notre Dame Mendoza's Round 1 deadline is not until October 28. There is an enormous difference in Round 1 feasibility (i.e., whether you still have to develop and submit "your best") between the
Harvard, Wharton, and LBS deadlines that are almost imminent, the
Booth, Tuck, and Sloan deadlines that are still 5 or 6 weeks away, and the
host of other Round 1 deadlines that don't come until October.
If you are considering splitting your applications between rounds, please remember that if you get accepted in Round 1 and want to hold your spot,
you will need to pay a deposit before you hear your Round 2 results, and
that it is extremely difficult to wait until you hear your Round 1 results and then "start" your Round 2 work. I would also caution strongly against a
common application trap, which is "reaching too far" in Round 1, missing, rushing in Round 2, and then missing again (with schools at which you feel like you should have been competitive).
