With Round 1 decisions coming out, nobody
wants to be in a place called the MBA waitlist. It feels like you’re half-accepted and half-rejected at the same time.
But here’s the thing: if you’re half “out,” you’re also half
in and still very much alive in the race.
If you want to make the most of the waitlist, a few things genuinely help:
1. Understand why schools use waitlists.A waitlist isn’t a soft rejection. Schools use it because they can’t predict Round 2 strength or yield. Many top programs
under-admit in Round 1 and later pull strong candidates from the waitlist once they see the full picture.
2. Follow the rules, even if you hate them. Some schools invite updates. Others say “no contact.” Respect whatever they ask. Breaking instructions sends the wrong signal.
3. If your school allows it, send a meaningful update. Not noise. Not filler. Share new achievements, refined clarity, or why the school is still your first choice. Keep it sharp and sincere.
4. Stay lightly in touch. Don’t vanish, but don’t hover.A quick update every few weeks, or a note if you’re visiting campus, keeps you on the radar without becoming “that applicant.”
5. Letters of support help, only when they’re real.If you’ve built genuine relationships with students or alumni, reach out. A short note from someone who knows you well can add signal.
6. Have a parallel plan. While you stay optimistic, keep building applications for Round 2. Even strong candidates sometimes get pushed to the next cycle. Give yourself options.
Being waitlisted is not a verdict; it’s an invitation to show maturity, clarity and commitment. Play it well and you may be the person they’re excited to say YES to in the next round. Chin up now
