Hi, everyone!
I'm considering a career move and would appreciate any advice that you may have for me!
I'm an Engineer from Brazil with relevant experience in projects and some experience in mining operations in the Amazon Rainforest. I am hooked by the financial analysis of projects, love managing my personal portfolio and like to follow news about the financial market.
I feel like pursuing further education in something that can take me to corporate finance / consulting in Europe.
So... MBA or Master in Finance?
Perhaps my previous experience added with a Master in Finance from top European School (UK, France or Spain) would be a good mix for employers?
Would the Master in Finance be a better investment than an MBA?
Would the Master in Finance help me land a good job in Europe?
Or would I be too old for a Master in Finance?
My profile:
- Brazilian and Portuguese nationalities
- Age: 30
- Work experience: 4.5 years - working in Brazil for an American Corporation in the metals industry. Had opportunities to work in an impactful project abroad.
- Bachelor's degree (2015): Mining Engineering (no GPA, but average grades)
- Master's degree (2019): Minerals Engineering (from top school in Brazil - No GPA, but good grades)
- GMAT: Studying to take it in December. Confident to score over 650.
- Consider starting program by Sep. 2020 / Jan. 2021
Thank you, guys! =D
Hi
Youraisemeup,
I would not categorically say that you are too old for an MFin programs. Yes, the class profile of an MFin program will be more hybrid - Will have students with 0.5 to even 4 to 5 years of work experience (Eg: The average class profile of Cambridge and LSE have 4+ years of work experience) so again it depends upon which program you are targeting.
MBA on the other hand will have a class profile of professionals with 4-7 years of work experience so your profile would easily fit in here.
The key difference lies in the curriculum of both the programs and the job profiles of the same - The finance curriculum of MFin will be more intensive than that of an MBA, but again the chances of getting mid-senior level positions are better with an MBA than an MFin.
As for Average salary with and MAsters in finance usually, a student gets around €63,000 as a starting average salary whereas with an MBA program the average salary is around $120,700 not to forgot the stats here are considering the top colleges for same though it might differ for different universities.
Since you already have a masters as well as an extensive work experience, practically going for an MBA is a better alternative as it would give you better job options.
Now talking about your profile, your ethnicity will help, as schools are always on the lookout for people from different nationalities to improve the diversity of the cohort. Also, you have enough work experience for an MBA program, that would also act as an added advantage.
The GPA is slightly on the lower end, so make sure that you aim for a competitive GMAT Score (730+ would be ideal).
Lastly, about the career switch, I understand that you are strongly inclined towards finance, but I am missing is the story- What prompted this interest . Schools will be interested in the reasons for the career switch,so make sure that you brainstorm and highlight the same.
Also, your profile is too technical, I strongly advise trying getting some finance related projects to complement your work profile or think of going for a CFA.
