I'm applying to Harvard's 2+2 MBA program and could use some advice on how best to communicate my career goals and justify the need for a deferred MBA, especially since I'll be joining MBB after graduation and HBS prefer applicants on less established paths.
Background: Nordic, Male
Education: B.Sc + M.Sc in Industrial Engineering (
GPA of 4.82/5.00), and B.Sc in Business (
GPA of 3.94/4.00), taken in parallel at different schools.
Work experience: Interned at MBB (accepted FT offer), IB internship at GS/JPM, Master's Thesis at a Sustainability Scale-up & couple of other finance internships. Entrepreneurially, I've founded two startups, one currently generating $700k in annual revenue with a 10-person team, albeit in an industry I'm looking to exit (i-gaming/sports betting) for ethical reasons.
Extracurricular: Leadership roles in student committees, student ambassador, and gold medalist in a European Championship team sport.
Career plans: Post-MBB, I'm drawn to entrepreneurship, with the deferred MBA providing a safety net and enabling risk-taking in startups. I am not sure how or what though, but have the impression I need to be much more specific in my application. Here is four possible paths I consider mentioning:
- MBB --> Sustainability Tech Startup: After MBB, leveraging consulting insights to tackle environmental challenges through innovative consumer goods solutions.
- MBB --> Non-Profit in Sports for Social Change: Utilizing sports and sports communities as a tool to address youth gang violence in my home country, drawing on strategic skills from MBB and personal experiences to implement scalable programs.
- MBB --> Sports Analytics Consulting: Building a firm that offers analytics solutions to sports entities, combining my MBB experience and passion for sports.
- Entreprenuership immediately. Not mentioning MBB at all, and instead describe a more risk-taking path with a new venture.
Given HBS 2+2's preference for applicants from less traditional paths, which of these career plans (if any) do you think makes most sense? Do you have any other advice?
Your career goals are an essential part of your application. You should be selecting them basis your overall profile so far and where do you see yourself getting in the next 5 years.
