Hey guys, I'd appreciate any insight you can offer. I'm an MD (medical doctor) with an offer for an associate position at MBB. Will my background as a physician be an advantage if I try to get into PE after doing consulting for some time? Do people know of examples of people who have done this and can comment on their experience? At what level would I enter into a PE firm and how much would I expect to earn?
Thanks for the help guys!
MDs are a very valuable asset for healthcare deals. Even if they don't use their education on a regular basis, it gives them a lot of credibility with owners of healthcare businesses (who are also sometimes MDs). You probably won't be able to get into a big leveraged buyout shop very easily, where financial engineering is used heavily, but you should have a shot at growth equity or VC firms. It won't be easy -- PE isn't easy for anyone to break into, but you should have a very realistic shot and the combo of MD + MBB experience will be very prized.
