Hi Gmatclub,
Awesome forum. This is my first post here. Humble request for advice pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease...
Really torn between Mendoza which has given me a full tuition ride and McDonough with a $30k scholarship. So torn that I have put in the deposit into both schools!!Under consideration for more scholarship from both schools. Have to start my I20 in a week and have to take a concrete decision before that.
I am an Indian, 10+ years of public sector banking and consulting work experience, looking to enter the top consulting firms (MBBs) or tier 2 firms (EY-P, LEK, ATK). GMAT 730.
Pros common to both schools:
1. Well recognised brand names across US (parent universities)
2. Good b-school in T20 to 30 range.
Aspects attracting me towards McDonough:
1. Solid pipeline into EY-P, EY, and other Big-4 firms
2. DC location
3. Very good academics and co-curriculars
4. Better quality peer group (I think?)
5. The b-school resonates closely with my experience so far and provides more probability of entering good consulting firms post MBA.
Aspects attracting me towards Mendoza:
1. Full scholarship obviously
2. One of the best alumni network.
3. The people ( I spoke to atleast 10 McDonough people and 10 Mendoza ppl and found that I liked the students in both places very much but just that I liked Mendoza ppl much much more )
4. Latest year (only latest year and not b4 that) students have gone into LEK, EY-P, ATK, and MBBs (single digits. But as a percentage of the total number of students, almost to equal McDonough)
5. Possibility of entering my target firms with minimum investment.
The dilemma:
I feel that
1. McD MBA might be better than that of Mdz in almost all spheres of the MBA program (say in terms of career services, academics, co-curriculars etc.,-please correct me if I am wrong). I
2. McD definitely provides better placement chances into atleast T2 consulting firms.
3. MBB chances from both schools are same (Though in Linkedin, I see that McD ppl in MBBs are mainly MBA grads while MDZ ppl at MBBs are mainly UGs)
4. McD provides more diverse placement chances for plan B and plan C if consulting doesn't work out.
5. Joining McD might force me to try recruiting into only the highest paying firms even if I feel after coming to the US that some other lower paying firm might be more suitable for my background.
Though McD is definitely better than MDZ in almost all spheres (except maybe the alumni network) I am very unsure whether this difference justifies the $110,000 difference. Personally, I am willing to take the debt if it is really worth it. But I am unable to really judge the difference. I accord great importance to the MBA experience and not just to placements. I am really inclined towards McD over MDZ inspite of the $ difference but if the right and the best thing to do is to join MDZ, I will do that. Which is why, I am here seeking guidance from this forum. I have no locational constraint. I understand that MDZ has jumped up in rankings this year. Please let me know your thoughts.
Thank you all very much.
