Thanks for taking time to answer question on this board.
I was wondering if you can give any insights on the merit scholarship award process. I would be interested to know what you think are factors in determining merit scholarships. Needless to say, I understand that merit scholarships are awarded to any applicant who the adcom really wants in a class. I was wondering if there can be more insight into what qualities such a candidate might possess.
For example, while a school might have mean GMAT of 720, and applicants over 700 are seriously considered, would a GMAT score of 800 really help the merit scholarship award decision?

I don't think anyone except the adcom can provide insight into how merit scholarships are awarded. I received one from Ross and can't tell you why I have one.
MBA programs that are trying to recruit students away from the top 10 (I'm using this designation very loosely) tend to be more generous with scholarships than those in the top 10. I have a few classmates at Ross who received substantial scholarships from lower-ranked schools. They were able to negotiate with Ross to get some $$, but from my limited sample, Ross didn't match the full amount. Some choose to go to Ross, others will go to the schools with better funding.
