Hello GMAT Club,
As I have read in many places, the MGMAT Quant section is supposedly more difficult to the GMAT. I do have a question about their CAT questions and their scoring methodology. In my latest CAT, I received at score of Q45 corresponding to a percentile of 66 which in my head, corresponds to a 620 on the 200-800 GMAT scoring.
However, in the latest CAT, I received 1 500-600 question (1 right, 0 wrong), 5 600-700 questions (3 right, 2 wrong) and 31 700-800 questions (16 right, 15 wrong). Average right answer is between 720 and 730 while average wrong answer is between 730 and 750.
This doesn't correlate with my actual GMAT score of 620 for the quantitative score. Obviously, I am missing a link here, but I am not sure what it is.
Can anyone let me know?

Yes, it does seem that way if you look at the percentiles, but it does not look that way if you look at the pure points. You got a Q45 out of 51 Max possible. You had only about 5-6 points to the max score (that's about proportional of a difference between 720 and 800). It works with points but not with percentiles.
However, knowing how algorithms work or should work, You got almost half of your total questions wrong. Not that the incorrect number of questions matters too much in the CAT's but you got half of them wrong. That's a lot of mistakes. You want to aim at under 10 and under 5 ideally for a Q50 score. Q45 is not a bad score but you needed to get more right to go up.
It is hard to build a CAT algorithm and I can't fault MGMAT in this one.

I was just trying to understand the correlation between the scores. I am making too many mistakes, especially in possibilities. However, hopefully the maxim "The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat" will apply. Reviewing all the incorrect questions to understand what went wrong. Only one that I am still not sure on and posted on the board.
My score is improving from Q43 - Q40 - Q45 with one week to go; timing is a very big issues since I can't seem to go through them quickly enough to have time for the more difficult longer questions. Score is a rude shock since I got 85-90% correct in the OG & 2nd Quant after going through my error log.
Anyway, thanks bb for creating this awesome forum.
