Hey Fam,
What is the problem with the below statement:

"The driver picked up the people who had been waiting at the airport"

Needless to say I didn't quite understand the explanation from the book.

Appreciate the help!

"The driver picked up the people who had been waiting at the airport".

To answer your question, I would say that the prepositional phrase "at the airport" has meaning ambiguity. In other words, it is not clear what "at the airport" refers to.

Meaning 1: The driver picked up people who were at the airport. People were waiting at the airport.
meaning 2: The driver picked people at the airport. The act of picking up happened in the airport but people may not necessarily be waiting at the airport; they could be somewhere close by and then the driver picked them from the airport.

Therefore, the placement of "who had been waiting" is logical but the placement of "for a ride" is not.
