Thanks guys. Good luck with the interview. I was just thinking about my application in a message I posted to another thread. I'm really worked up about it now so I'm going to repeat some of it here in the Michigan thread.
I don't know why I haven't received an invite yet. My Michigan application was the best I put together. Here are some strengths:
1. I had a great story for how I would use action based learning - I actually launched a business based on an action based learning class that I took at Michigan Business School.
2. I also described how I would use other parts of the action based curriculum to launch a grander business in the future.
3. The weakest part of my application is my GPA, but in the one opportunity I had to take a course at the Michigan Business School, I got an "A", so that should really alleviate any concerns about my grades. Why extrapolate based on someone's undergraduate grades; I have proof that I can handle the work there.
4. I have ties to Michigan already so they shouldn't worry about yield. I won't be scared off by the cold, and Michigan football is a great bonus for me.
5. I really had a good feel for the essays and I believe they are well written.
6. The do-gooder extracurricular activities in my background were mostly during the time I was at Michigan. I worked on a huge case with the Michigan Legal Clinic representing female inmates suing the Michigan Department of Corrections. I volunteered by drafting briefs in support of immigrants seeking humanitarian relief because they faced deportation to countries with severe human rights issues. I also helped business owners affected by the 9/11 attacks file for federal aid, but that was later.
Weaknesses:
1. GPA - but as mentioned above, Michigan should be the least concerned of any school that I applied to because I have actually demonstrated the ability to handle the work there.
2. Age - can't do anything about this, but again Michigan should be the most understanding. I spent 3 years right across the street from the business school - literally, because I lived there as well. I spent two years at law firms, but I have spent the last 4 years applying concepts learned through action based learning launching a business.
The final note is that my application came complete really late because of a recommendation problem, so perhaps they haven't reviewed it yet. I can't change my age or GPA, but I've done as much as I can to make the rest of the application strong. I guess what I'm thinking is if I cannot get an interview here, I might as well forget about everywhere else.
