Michigan State is not far away from the Near Elite cluster. There is a group of about four or so schools that hover right by the Near Elite cluster-Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Penn State.

When it comes to institutional reputation, Michigan State University is outclassed by such Near Elites parent universities as Washington University, Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt. For reputation in applied economics, Michigan State does not come anywhere near Rochester. When it comes to reputation for quantitative skills, it is not one the same level as Purdue.

Of course, any ranking is just a starting point when evaluating schools.
