I understand there is a difference in meaning between original sentence and D, but in the original question analysis it is mentioned that option E is correct dramatically (only the verb usage is incorrect), so what is the difference between D and E (apart from the wrong verb usage in E)? As E has been eliminated only because of wrong verb usage and it made use of 'the' I want to better understand the difference between D and E and what makes both incorrect.
D. The Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, and the Apple founder, Steve Jobs, are giants
E. Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder, and Steve Jobs, the Apple founder, had been giants

To answer your query, Option E incorrectly uses the past perfect tense verb "had been" to refer to an action that takes place in the current time frame (this sentence was presumably written before Steve Jobs passed away, otherwise he would not have been listed alongside Bill Gates in this way); remember, the simple present tense is used to refer to actions that take place in the current time frame, and the past perfect tense (marked by the use of helping verb "had") is used when a sentence contains two actions in the past; the helping verb "had" is used with the action in the "greater past".
