C.

Each answerchoice has ambiguous 'it' reference

OA is C.

But, I chose D (even though, I didnt like the 'yet') because, I thought 'it' is required as the subject for the clause starting with 'but'?

Is C correct because it is // to the first modifying phrase, 'hundreds of times more massive..'?
so does that mean, 'but' can also introduce phrases?

thanks.

in this sentence "but" is not underlined, so one has to live with it. "but" and "yet" together is incorrect since this introduces redundancy (they are both contrasting words)
