been in that situation...

if you are applying for R2 - go ahead and apply.. nothing has happened so far...

if u do get laid off - use the optional essay to explain your situation

schools are aware of the volatile economic situation these days

Ok,..just got an email from the CEO,..we apparently did have some significant cuts today and I heard of people being escorted out. Fortunately I still have my job. Should be good until next year atleast, but you never know. Anyway, now i can atleast finish my apps in peace.

That is great man! Nice news to hear after your initial post. Just dominate those applications over the next week.

Sorry I didn't discover this earlier to give you some advice. Anyway, it's good that you get to keep your job. Good luck with your apps.

Re: Might get laid off today [#permalink]
I am in a similar situation where my company will be the target of a merger. We don't know who we are merging with yet but we won't survive long as things currently stand. I planned to apply next year but decided to put in my app and take my GMAT all in a hurry.

There are a couple positives though:

-I was able to obtain a recommendation from the company COO who was directly responsible for a couple of promotions in my 4 years of service with the company

-Whoever is being let go will be able to find employment with one of our partner companies. So even if my MBA app doesn't go through I still have a fall back plan. But I'd much rather go back to school this year since I am 30 now and don't want to do an EMBA

Hi everyone,

Hope these thoughts are of help. A candidate may be outright fired from a job for poor performance. More frequently, however, we see applicants who are laid off due to downsizing. This often happens very early on in a job, before the applicant even has a chance to prove his- or herself in the position. As with other difficult situations, this is a time for honesty. If you have made a mistake, this is the time to own up to what happened and take responsibility for a poor decision.

If you were caught by surprise early on in a job, you can explain what was learned, and demonstrate how you have bounced back from this failure or setback.

Cheers,
