I'm a recent undergrad and am slated to start an MiM in London this coming year. I want to do an MiM now because I would like to 1) work in London, 2) make a career switch into consultancy. However, I would also ultimately like to do an MBA in the U.S. I emailed my alma mater in the U.S. (top 15 MBA schools in the world) to ask if I could still apply for an MBA after accumulating more work experience after my MiM, and the reply was that it is possible to apply for an accelerated 1-year MBA instead. This way it actually also saves me quite a bit of money. However, most of my friends have told me that it would be severely detrimental to do an MiM and then apply for an MBA and advised me not to do an MiM.

1) MBA is for experienced professionals who want to excel in their careers, whereas a MIM is for fresh graduates who wish to kick start their career.
2) MBA has a more practical approach, whereas MIM’s will be more theoretical. An MBA focuses on case studies and projects, whereas MIM’s will be more lecture-oriented and theory-based.
3) MBA focuses on building a specialization, whereas MIM focuses on building a foundation. You will gain knowledge of elective courses in an MBA, whereas in a MIM dive deeper into the cores of businesses.
4) MBA cost is higher- The tuition fee for an MBA is higher than the tuition fee for a MIM, in fact, the cost of doing an MBA is twice the cost of doing a MIM.

The program you are talking to is probably transferring MiM credits and calling that Y1 of their MBA - which is fair since the curriculum is largely the same. The reasoning on why it is bad to do a MiM and then a MBA is because it is redundant. Admissions folks at top schools generally try and weed out brand accumulators. You wont learn anything in an MBA coming from a MiM (frankly, you would learn much coming from an UG in business either) and you would clearly be doing it to add another university name to your resume.
Now, outside of top schools (1-15), programs are dying to tuition and will most likely not care or look the other way. College is a business and as long as you meet the entrance requirements they will happily accept your tuition. I personally wouldn't waste time with an MBA after a MiM, but that is your choice.
