Hello everyone,
My career objective is to enter the US market after my MiM. I am also considering the European MiM hoping that they will give me chances to go to the US but from what I saw in the career prospect most graduate stay in Europe. My question is, taking into consideration my profile, which school could I target? And would they be worth the price tag (I know that this question is very subjective). I also checked out the Thunderbird master in global management and would appreciate any opinion on that.
Bachelor background: Mostly engineering international relations and science but I do reach the 60 cfu/ects/credits of Business Administration related courses
GPA: Italian 28.5/30 --> 3.8/4 from top 15 Italian university
GMAT: I do not have an official score yet, I am scoring 700 in the mock tests but I think I will get 680-ish ( I am terrible at standardised tests)
Academic extras: Soft skills and cultural management seminars (20 hours each) 1 semester abroad during my bachelor, high school finished abroad (2-years alone abroad). I am writing a thesis on Sustainability & Business.
Professional experience: I worked two years in the family business with duties of relation with suppliers and accounting. I opened a non-profit organisation regarding social entrepreneurship. I worked 1 month at KPMG (the time was fixed but I am afraid they will think I was fired although in my contract the 1-month time is clearly stated) with duties of public audit.
Recommendation Letter: My course coordinator and the KPMG partner I worked for when the professional reference is accepted
Languages: Italian and Spanish at mother tongue level (certified) and English (IELTS 8.0)
Even if you don't have an answer for all my (many) questions, feel free to comment as any input is appreciated.
Thank you all in advance
Hi
amngm,
By rule of thumb, you must always target schools in a country where you want to work in the future. This is because all the major companies will be recruiting from the top schools of their home country, so if you are are very specific of working in the US, I would suggest you to go for the top US schools, especially since your profile looks pretty good and you would have a fair chance with a strong application.
Countries like US, UK and Germany place a lot of emphasis on academics, so in this context the combination of your GPA+College Rank works out.
International Experience and social entrepreneurship are strong points that can be a differntiator if portrayed properly.
I feel that you are under-selling your work ex part though - If you have concrete achievements in your family business , it would add quite some weight-age to your application.
Don't worry about the KPMG Part, you can just state it as a one month experience. However, I would suggest you rethink approaching your KPMG Manager for an LOR - Recommendations should be given by people with whom you have worked closely and for a considerable period of time (A minimum of 3 months in case of internships). Maybe a professor or someone you have worked with in your entrepreneurial stint can be a better Referee.
With your profile, Thunderbird will be a safe school for you - Would suggest you to aim for more competitive programs like UT Dallas (STEM), University of Virginia (STEM), Babson, Duke and Michigan.
Can take up this quick evaluation so that I can get back with an in-depth analysis? I will be able to suggest the best programs for your profile.
