What I take from the article is not a strecth of resume, but an outright lie.

Showing yourself in the best possible light is very different from fabricating things that never happened. Too bad that there will be no legal action. She looses face..so what ? She should loose some money too.

Yeah, she claimed to have bachelor's and master's degrees from RPI and an additional unnamed degree from Albany Medical College. What she actually had was 1 year of part-time study at RPI. That's more than stretching the truth; that's about as blatant as it gets.

Since last fall, Ms. Jones had been making speeches around the country to promote her book, тАЬLess Stress, More Success: A New Approach to Guiding Your Teen Through College Admissions and Beyond,тАЭ written with a pediatrician, Dr. Kenneth R. Ginsburg. The book had added to her reputation as a kind of guru of the movement to tame the college admissions frenzy.

тАЬLess Stress, More SuccessтАЭ addresses not only the pressure to be perfect but also a need to live with integrity.

тАЬHolding integrity is sometimes very hard to do because the temptation may be to cheat or cut corners,тАЭ it says. тАЬBut just remember that тАШwhat goes around comes around,тАЩ meaning that life has a funny way of giving back what you put out.тАЭ

Quote:
Jones has a long history at MIT, first coming to the Institute with her husband, Steven R. Bussolari PhD '83, in 1978. At the time, Bussolari was serving as a Graduate Resident Tutor at Burton-Conner House and is now an Associate Division Head at the Lincoln Laboratory.

In 1979, Jones took a secretarial job in the Admissions Office that Clay described as "a very junior entry level position [that] did not require a bachelor's degree." Jones, however, listed multiple degrees on her r├йsum├й. Those degrees weren't checked because Jones was not in a "mission critical" position, said Clay. In the coming years, Jones gained more responsibility in the Admissions Office and was at one point tasked with increasing the percentage of females at MIT.

What a Joke!!! She preaching the virtues of integrity

It isn't that she lied about 1 or 2 years of work-ex, but the claim of 3 Degrees from different colleges is too much....

Goddamit what the heck MIT was doing all these years..may be time to verify the credentials of all the employees in Universities

This is a bit tricky and overblown in some quarters.

Sure, practice what you preach is ideal, but I am sure 90% of folk can get called up on not doing that. It really is very very easy to point out inconsistencies in what people recommend for others and practice themselves, so I would steer well clear of that.

It's sad that this overshadows what has clearly been a sucessful career based on personal ability and skills. There is no suggestion that she got more recent roles through the original deceit. It just happens that such things catch up with people, and the more senior you are the more people wish to knock you down.

Anyway - In all likelihood she will build a career through the speaking circuit on the same line of "integrity", pointing that she has learned the hard way.

I'm just sorry that I'm only now finding out that MIT does a horrible job of background checks, otherwise I'd be going to MIT this Fall. (No way they would have dinged if they read about my Nobel Peace Prize and the time I tagged along with the Russians on a trip to the International Space Station).

yeah thats pretty ridiculous, if you're going for a high profile job like that, you need to expect a background check.

Actually she had worked for MIT for 28 years and the first job she applied to didn't require a college degree. That's why they never checked up on her. And apparently they got an anonymous call that alerted them to it.

Pretty amazing. My wife has told me that on more than one occasion at her work she has had people put that they were bi-lingual on their resume (English and Spanish) and it turned out during the interview that they took a class in high school and figured that experience would be sufficient to prove their claims...too bad my wife's native tongue is Spanish, so that didn't go over too well for the applicants.
