MIT's Rigorous EMBA Admissions
Many talented businesspersons find the MIT EMBA program to be a very attractive option. After all – it is MIT! As we all know, MIT is not only home to one of the best business schools, but also one of the top colleges, outstanding graduate school programs and world-renowned faculty, some of them Nobel prize-winning. Yet, many people have heard murmurings about the difficulty of the MIT EMBA admissions process. Some observers believe it is harder to get into MIT’s EMBA program than any other. We at MBA Admit.com have been around as a company longer than even the first EMBA program, and hence we have seen these programs launch and develop. We have also successfully helped many candidates through the application process to MIT’s EMBA program. So, do we find MIT’s EMBA application process very rigorous when compared to other top EMBA programs? Yes, I consider it very likely the most rigorous U.S. EMBA application process. This is the case for many reasons.
First, the essay topics in the application are complex. You don’t just have the typical “why MBA” and optional essay. Instead, you must present a statement of purpose, a leadership essay (which needs to be stellar), and an essay that explains how you have already supported the mission of the school (you should try to hit that one out of the ballpark). Here is the exact wording of the essays:
1. Statement of purpose (one page) The MIT Executive MBA Students and Community are: Open, Collaborative and Inventive. Please tell us why you are pursuing the MIT Executive MBA, and what you will contribute to your classmates and the community at MIT. Include examples of success working with organizations, groups, and individuals. For those reapplying, please highlight developments since your last submission. Essay 1 (one page) The educational mission of the MIT Sloan School of Management is to "develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world." Please discuss how you will contribute toward advancing this mission based on examples of past work and activities.
Essay 2 (one page) Please tell us about a time when you introduced an idea that changed the way in which your organization approached a business challenge or opportunity. Comment on the factors considered, and the barriers or obstacles faced.
Recommendations: Three! In addition, you have an option of a third recommendation writer, and for candidates seeking an edge, it is advisable to garner a third recommendation. That is more work!
Organizational Chart: Kiss of Death? You also need to submit an organization chart. Most other top EMBA programs do not require this. For some candidates, this requirement is nerve-racking because they fear they are too junior in their company to fare well in EMBA admissions and the organizational chart might simply underscore this. (We have found that the organizational chart need not derail an application, even when a candidate is more junior. But, you should strive to compose an organizational chart that puts you in the best light.)
Not One Interview, But Two! When a candidate receives an interview, which are by invitation only, he or she goes through not one, but two interviews. Usually, the two interviewers represent different interested parties, like an Admissions Committee member and a faculty member. In past years, professional interviewers were also used! Most other top EMBA programs only require one admissions interview.
Heavy on Behavioral Questions Finally, because MIT’s EMBA admissions interviews are also heavily behavioral question-focused, that also makes the process more challenging. You will need to be comfortable responding to “tell me about a time when” type questions. You need to demonstrate your leadership and decision making clearly in your responses.
So yes, this is a rigorous process. But it is possible to have success. You should strategize excellently from the very beginning to make sure you include excellent information in your two-page resume that you can submit with the application. Very importantly, hone in on some of your best credentials, experiences and qualifications as you put your essays together. An outstanding application and excellent recommendations make all of the difference between acceptance or rejection.
