Question

Can I get some help here.

A store sells 2 kinds of jelly beans mixes (A and B)both made up of red and yellow beans. if b contains 20% more red beans than A but 10% fewer yellow beans. and Jar A contains twice as many red beans as yellow by what percent is the number of beans in Jar B larger than the number in Jar A

Is the answer 10%?

B contains 20% more red beans than A. So lets say A has R red beans then B has 1.2R red beans. Also, A contains 10% more yellow beans than B. So, if B contains Y yellow beans then A contains 1.1Y yellow beans.

Jar A contains twice as many red beans as yellow.
Let say, A has x yellow beans that means there are 2x red beans. So A has 3x beans in total.

So, B has 2.4x read beans, since B has 20% more read beans, and .9x yellow, since B has 10% less yellow beans. So, B has 3.3x beans.

So B has 10% more beans than A.

B = cR + dY

c = 1.2a, b = 0.9d
a = 2b
c+d = x (a+b) , x =?

a+b = 3b
c = 1.2 * 2b = 2.4b
c+d = 3.3b

x = 3.3b/3b = 1.1, hence 10% more.

B(Red)=1.2A(Red)
B(Yellow)=0.9A(Yellow)
b(Total)=1.2A(Yellow)+0.9A(Yellow)=1.2*2A(Yellow)+0.9A(Yellow)

I substitute numbers rather than solving it algebraically. It will be hard to keep track of everything during real GMAT and I am very prone to silly mistakes, so this will simplify everything.
 A has 10 yellows
 20 reds
 total=30
 so B has 1.2 x 20 =24 reds
 0.9 x 10 = 9 yellows
 total=33

difference= 3/30= 10%
