1. Modern navigation systems, which are found in most of today?¡¥s commercial aircraft, are made with low-power circuitry, which is more susceptible to interference than the vacuum-tube circuitry found in older planes. During landing, navigation systems receive radio signals from the airport to guide the plane to the runway. Recently, one plane with low-power circuitry veered off course during landing, its dials dimming, when a passenger turned on a laptop computer. Clearly, modern aircraft navigation systems are being put at risk by the electronic devices that passengers carry on board, such as cassette players and laptop computers.

The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first is a principle that the argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that can be drawn from the first.

(B) The first is a fact that argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that must be drawn from this argument.

(C) The first acknowledges a consideration that supports that main position; the second is that conclusion.

(D) The first is an evidence that supports the conclusion, the second is that conclusion.

(E) The first is a principle that is necessary for this argument, the second is a conclusion that could be drawn from this argument.

My answer is B.

First sentence is a fact, not a principle.

(A) The first is a principle that the argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that can be drawn from the first. The first is not a principle

(B) The first is a fact that argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that must be drawn from this argument. Correct!

(C) The first acknowledges a consideration that supports that main position; the second is that conclusion. The first is not a consideration

(D) The first is an evidence that supports the conclusion, the second is that conclusion. The first is not an evidence; the evidence would be the sentence after the first bold sentence

(E) The first is a principle that is necessary for this argument, the second is a conclusion that could be drawn from this argument.[/quote] The first is not a principle.

I think D is better. The conclusion needs of another evidence to be drawn. Only the first bolded part is not enough.

Why not the first BF is the principle? It is the principle on which modern navigation systems rely to operate.

I think must be drawn in B is too absolute.

Thus E is the best.

We can take D out, as the first bf is not an evidence supporting the conclusion
We can take out A and E as the first bf is not a principal but a fact
We can take out C as the the first bf is not supporting any stand made by the author

B is the best choice

I vote for B.

A - Incorrect. The first is not a principle
B - Correct. It is a FACT
C - Incorrect. There is no acknowledgement.
D - Incorrect. The first is not evidence.
E - Incorrect. The first is not a principle

Step 1 .Identify conclusion

Conclusion:

Clearly, modern aircraft navigation systems are being put at risk by the electronic devices that passengers carry on board, such as cassette players and laptop computers.

2.Identify Evidence

Evidence:

Recently, one plane with low-power circuitry veered off course during landing, its dials dimming, when a passenger turned on a laptop computer

FACT:(First Part)

During landing, navigation systems receive radio signals from the airport to guide the plane to the runway

Now ,let's go for POE

ADE are out as the first part is neither a principle nor an evidence.

Left with B and C.

OA is C.

always avoid extreme choices. must in B is extreme. That made the difference between B and C.
