I have a confusion b/w options c and e. It's a question on 'X or Y' where X and Y need to be parallel and X as well Y should independently fit grammatically with the remainder of the sentence. This logic weeds out option a, b and d.
Now, according to Veritas, 'use of two "Noun+Preposition"s is awkward and the change to inhibition from more active inhibiting slightly changes the meaning of the sentence'.
According to me, option e significantly changes the meaning of the sentence:
The original sentence implies that modern pesticides exterminate many insects or inhibit the reproduction of many insects.
Option e implies that modern pesticides exterminate the reproduction of many insects or inhibit the reproduction of many insects.
Hence, c should be the correct option. Request you to let me know your thoughts.

C also has an unacceptable deviation from original intent. The original says ‘inhibiting the reproduction of’ while C says ‘inhibition of the growth of”
Empathizing with Veritas, this is how I see option E:
E. exterminating (many insects) or inhibiting the reproduction of (many insects)
A which comes close to this will not be as complete
inhibiting the reproduction(many insects) or exterminating (many insects)
