Modern pesticides provide a valuable service to farmers by inhibiting the reproduction or exterminating many insects.
a. inhibiting the reproduction (OF is missing) or exterminating
b. the extermination or the inhibiting the growth of ('the inhibiting...' is awkward and wordy).
c. the extermination of or the inhibition of the growth of (This is wordy, and changes the meaning by swapping 'reproduction' for 'growth.')
d. exterminated or inhibited reproduction of (The verb form should be 'by Verb-ing)
e. exterminating or inhibiting the reproduction of many insects. ('exterminating' is in the correct form and 'inhibiting...of' is idiomatically correct and preserves the original meaning).

You are asking why E, not C. I think the simple answer is a participle (inhibiting) is a better fit than a noun (inhibition). In general, a verb is better than a adjective better than a noun. This is an advanced topic covered by Manhattan in chapter 11 of their SC guide.

Also, make a simple sentence yourself. For example, I caught the mistake by the examination of my own work or I caught the mistake by examining my own work. Which one sounds better?

Why does option 'E' have 'many insects' ?

Does anybody have another explanation why E is the answer and not D. I am unsure why the "the" is necessary? I was choosing between those 2 and chose E because it was less wordy. Thanks.

endings must match "-ing" and "of" must be included.
