This was the sentence:
Left alone in the house, the thunderstorm terrified the two small children.
I was asked to correct it as an excercise:
Here is my solution:
Left alone in the house, the two small children were terrified by the thunderstorm.
Is this right?
The web site had it as:
The thunderstorm terrified the two small children left alone in the house.
I agree with the website, but I was wondering if my solution was right too.

this a good example of misplaced modifier error...and i think you have done it rit,,,,,
but the only reason why website differs can be the fact that gmat prefers active voice over passive voice...
moreover it is preferred that you use the subject in the very first place in sentence.............
......
coming out of the dept. store, jim's wallet was robbed...
incorrect
coming out of the dept. store,jim was robbed of his wallet.....
correct,,,,,

I am not a native speaker, but at the Veritas course our teacher explained us that if a clause is essential to the meaning of the sentence you cannot separate it with a comma from the rest of the sentence.
And here the fact that the children are left alone in the house is key for the meaning of the sentence : if they were not alone they would not be as terrified as they are.
So the answer with no comma is better.
If for example the first clause said "Both with their red t-shirts and blue shortpants, the two small children...", then I guess it would be ok.
