D.
Adapted/adapting to something is idiomatic i think.
though a bit awkward, Comparative Participial phrase seems to make proper use of more.. than. I somehow dont like adapting/adapt for in the other choices.

Bozo,
The OA will probably say A, but I do not think I agree with that .
Baner,
Where are these questions from?. In some of the ETS paper tests I have taken, I haven't come across a single ambiguous question. I am begining to wonder about the quality of some of these SC questions from different sources...

I think it is fine. Grammatically, I am not sure Paul might be the best person to answer that, but the other choices are so wrong that it just leaves A. Also, i think than other animals or other folks....seems correct to me.
Paul might help with the grammatical structure a little more.

Banerjee,
I guess the confusion comes from the use of elliptical clause in some places and not using them in some places.
e.g,
1) I am stronger than you is correct.
2) I am stronger than you are is also correct
In 1) elliptical clause comes in to play and we are really saying I am stronger than you (are), but we leave out the second verb(are).
More completely adapted for life in the trees than are the other anthropoids
uses the second pattern in that it calls out the second verb 'are' explicitly.
One more thing to notice here - the subject and verb are inverted in "are the other anthropoids". Perhaps that is what confused you.

I will pick (A) for correct comparison.. I used POE.
More completely adapted for life in the trees than are the other anthropoids, gibbons move with tremendous facility and ease.
(B): wrong: adaptation of gibbons is compared with anthropoids
(C): wrong:
1. being adapted (passive)
2. than any of the other anthropoids are. Correct sentence structure will be than are any of the other anthropoids (D): wrong: Not parallel: adapting - verb ; adaptation : Noun
(E): wrong: Wordy when compared to (A).
