Most Americans seem to think that the Denver-Boulder area receives a lot of snow each year because they are so close to the mountains.

(A) that the Denver-Boulder area receives a lot of snow each year because they are so close to the mountains.
(B) as the Denver-Boulder area receives a lot of snow each year because it is so close to the mountains.
(C) that the Denver-Boulder area receives a lot of snow each year because it is so close to the mountains.
(D) that the Denver-Boulder area receives a lot of snow each year because we are so close to the mountains.
(E) that the Denver-Boulder area received a lot of snow each year because it is so close to the mountains.

What is wrong with E?
'Each year' indicates that present tense should be used, therefore 'received' here is wrong.

Hope it helps!

I am not very good with Grammar rules - Is there any such rule that dictates the reasoning provided?
Thanks.

Yes there is one, sentences with time frames such as seldom, often, every year, each year and many more indicate present tense for the verbs involved in that timeframe. For example, 'The man celebrates christmas every year' or 'The man often stays up late' uses present tense.

Just a friendly reminder to please please please name the source whenever you post a new question!

(And for whatever it's worth: we actually do get a lot of snow here in the Denver-Boulder area! But in the cities, it almost always melts within a few days. :-D )
