I will go with B

A Self-destruction is the most frequent result of espionage. --> not mentioned in the stem
B The desire to feel powerful is always irrational.-->CORRECT: it is mentioned as one of the irrational desires
C Those involved in espionage do not have rational reasons for their behavior.-->the author never talks about espionage in general but only about specific espionage i.e those betraying their countries
D Espionage is rarely a successful way to gain revenge.--> the author never talked about this ...irrelevant
E Risk-taking is a less frequent motivation for espionage than the desire to feel important.--> this comparison was never done in the original stem

assumption would be.....irrational people ==> will get involved in espionage

or

people involved in espionage are irrational (option C)

A good strategy to solve this assumption problems is finding
A. Self-destruction here is a behavior, not a result.
B. Not always.
C. True, at least the author can't mention any.
D. Doesn't matter whether successful or not.
E. The author doesn't prioritize the motivations for espionage.

C is the best choice.

Can any of experts elaborate on this problem. I am confused why the answer choice C needs to be the correct answer.

Hi Guys,

Let me know if this helps. Try the following steps for assumption questions:

Step 1: What is the conclusion? (Key word here: "would")

The people involved in this behavior (i.e. espionage) are irrational.

Step 2: Add the word "because" to the end of the conclusion.

The people involved in this behavior (i.e. espionage) are irrational BECAUSE...

Step 3: Add the answer choice after the 'because' and see whether there is a logical flow to the sentence.

The people involved in this behavior (i.e. espionage) are irrational BECAUSE (C) they have no rational reasons for their behavior.

A tip from GMAX: An obvious-seeming answer is a correct answer! An answer that seems to obvious is not a sign that you've been duped, but a sign that you've found your answer!
